On August 24, 2015 my last uncle, Le Vern Ostrander, passed from a stroke. His home at 9324 HIllside Drive, was built by he and his father, Earl. The Earl Ostrander homestead was partially burned due to a fire apparently set by squatters. It sits today in the same condition. The value in the residence is the hard-wood floor which to this day has never 'creaked. I do not know the mortgage bank who is the legal owner. The pond was built by my uncle Russell and like the rest of the property is not cared for. What was once coveted St Augustine lawn is now knee-deep in weeds. Turning on the water valve in the "pond" allows for flood-watering. The ground level allowed for the water to flow irrigation-style. Once maintenance free with only occasional mowing. Once a beloved house. If I had the money, I would restore it myself. Am hoping someone can see the life still left in this house and save it from complete ruin. In later years, the roof was put on by two sons, Jack and Avondale. The demographics have changed. The builder, Earl Ostrander, was an early settler in the 1920's. He and wife "Sis" raised seven children. My heart cries now that I have lost the last survivor of the original Ostrander household, my beloved uncle. I'm hoping the bank will allow for property salvage rather than allow it to be burned down to the ground. I do have a picture of our "Home Sweet Home" of the 1960's. It had its charms. August 2015

This property was renovated by last buyers; however, both man and his wife passed away; son painted the home and out buildings, while his mother still lived there...I knew her, don't know the son. I heard she had Alzheimer's. Presently, there is reputed to be illegal trespassing with "homeless" living inside the home. I am reporting this to the local fire dept and county sheriff department as I would not like to see this home burn down and threaten nearby homes as well. This home orginally built and owned by Earl and Clemence Ostrander abt. 1945 along with surrounding land. When Earl retired and on social security, he slowly sold off parcels with a life until death provision for one of his sons, Russell, who also since passed away. Another of the sons owed hospital bills, so sadly the house was sold to pay the bill and taxes, and eventually sold to the couple who renovated it. Perhaps taxes are due from the son of the couple to explain the present foreclosure (?)by the bank. My grandfather, Earl Ostrander was one of the early settlers held in high regard by the town populace. He built homes, cabinets, the original post office, repair work for the Pres. Church, etc. (He was a member of the Delhi Presbylterian Church.) Clemence was a member of the Delhi Friendship Club who made homemade patchquilts for the needy. This house represents the legacy of a hard working, moral, gentle man, who wanted to give back to his community. When the depression hit, he and sons took work at the docks in the Bay Area, built roofs, including one of the hotels in Yosemite. He got in the food line, but after two days in the line, he stepped out and vowed to do any kind of work to make it by. He worked his entire life until he was struck with 7 strokes the last of which took his life. Clemence died of a heart attack during the ordeal of seeing her husband having one stroke after another. Their only daughter died of cancer and the will to live slowly degraded. However, it should be known that he supported a large family ...they were industrious...and it is a sad end to a valiant life, well-lived...from Pueblo to Armel, Colorado; to Santa Monica, CA and finally Delhi. They lived in a shanty while he built the two-story white house down the lane which burned down years ago while occupied by new owners. I haven't been in this house since the last couple renovated....I don't have the heart (I lived with my grandparents in this home pre-school and during my junior-college years 1962-1964...and highly respected and loved them. I live in Mariposa, but my surviving uncle,Le Vern Ostrander, son of Earl and Clemence, still lives in his home that "Dad built" on Hillside Drive. I hate to think of this dear house built in the 1940's burn down and perhaps take nearby homes as well. I wish I could afford to buy the home myself and return it to its original glory. The fireplace built of river rock and bricks had to be removed due to deterioration of the concrete holding the rock and brick together. It was designed and built by my grandfather and is much like the one in pictures of the original community building of the 20's. BTW my uncle Russell built the pond and slate driveway. It was always painted a barn red with white trim with lots of greenery, including climbing roses, which he planted and cared for. The dogwood was planted by my mother, Helen who passed in 1978. Too bad the house can't be used for an honorable and useful purpose...if only the church community could pitch in and save it. But, I realize the demographics and population has changed greatly...though the memories remain. Thank you for these last words for 'a time gone by'. At the graveside services, my grandfather said, "Well, Sis is gone...I can die now." They are both buried at Turlock Memorial Park Cem. I will be heartbroken when I must say goodbye to the home that Dad built. JRB
